New scholar profile:
I am from Carrboro, North Carolina, and graduated from Duke University with a major in English. My independent scholarship has focused on gender and the work force in the Middle East, as well as representations of women taking on a traditionally male aesthetic in English and American film and literature. At Duke, I led an organization committed to dialogue between Arabs, Jews, Muslims, and Israelis to promote peace and understanding, as well as a nonprofit to benefit children with life-threatening illnesses, with whom I have volunteered for the past five years. I also have experience working with special education and with women’s rights organizations in the United States and in Jordan. After graduation, I studied Arabic at the University of North Carolina, and I am traveling to Lebanon to complete a poetry project with a Benenson Award in the Arts. I will pursue an MPhil in Modern Middle Eastern Studies at Cambridge and plan to enter academia.
